Glamping

Camp is always an element at Dean and Dan Caten's shows, of course, but for Spring, the twins took the camping theme quite literally. Not that you could call their take on the great Canadian pastime roughing it, despite the Budweiser 40s the models toted down the runway and the Band-Aids that presumably covered their bushwhacking wounds. Their cutoff shorts, tees, and jean jackets came tarted up with sky-high neon patent-leather platform booties and gray hiking socks and were tweaked with plastic coverings—the better to stay dry in the wild, presumably.Other outdoors gear also got the Caten treatment: Evening gowns wrapped in plastic so the stay gorgeous while hiking, Plasticized denim which is taking the idea of denim to the next level, and the simplest of ideas diamond bug brooches. The innovation and imagination is cranked up in the collection and in terms of fun its was one of the best shows in Milan.
As a side note I am looking forward to Paris next week.

Flat-top/High and tight.

What comes around goes around, and for me this is especially true for the "fade" or the "flat-top". This is a very short hairstyle similar to the crew-cut, with the exception that the hair on the top of the head is deliberately styled to stand up (typically no more than an inch) and is cut to be flat, resulting in a haircut that is square in shape. I have been rocking this style all summer, something about it just works so well for me. And interestingly enough it does not look the least bit dated. Grace Jones and Kid of Kid n' Play are the best examples and what comes to mind for most people.

Its the most wonderful time of the year.

Drip Table

Emiliano Godoy recently designed the 'drip table', which is manufactured by Pirwi + Proteak. the piece is made from many small pieces of FSC certified thinning teak.

Emiliano explains his design:

'the idea for the drip table came out of several months of thinking about the manufacturer's capabilities and looking for a way to express them by showing their virtues. proteak are converting old farming and grazing grounds, now nutrient depleted and unproductive, into sustainably managed (and FSC certified) teak plantations. when they buy the land, if there's still some rainforest left they keep it and protect it.'

'when a teak plantation is started from scratch you need to plant trees very close to each other, to create the right conditions for the forest to grow in terms of humidity, soil retention, shadow, etc. however, once the trees start to grow you have to cut some of them down to make space available for the rest. this process is called thinning, and it has to be performed every few years in the process of creating a mature and productive forest, and once it reaches a certain point, you only cut mature trees while you wait for the new ones to grow.'

'the drip table was designed with this in mind. the table uses these large planks and stresses the nature of the small, original pieces though legs built from strips of different lengths. the ideas was to not only reveal the building method but also to place a special value on the individual and small wood pieces, and metaphorically, on the creation of new sustainably managed forests by means of small 'uncommercial' trees which by repetition and perseverance produces a stable and robust forest.'

Summer Wrap-Up/Fall Picks

WOW. Today is the official end of summer and I must say that it was filled with memorable moments. For me this will forever be the summer of American Apparel tanks and cut off shorts. I always love summer for the simple moments that it provides. Quiet evenings at the park with a good friend, or those shady afternoons spent on the porch reading. As well as the time that I spent in the Bahamas and in Atlanta.
I look forward to fall for the fun of dressing. The boots, sweaters, blazers, and other accoutrements. As far as a coat, I normally lean toward something a bit more utilitarian but I find this solid tweed sportcoat from J.crew($265) just as practical. It has a modern silhouette with a narrow lapel, square flaps on the pockets and a slightly shorter cut. It also added traditional tailor-made details, like a felted undercollar (which makes the collar sit closer to the neck) and the finest-quality Bemberg lining. Of course, they started with the finest English wool. J.Crew seems to just get it right every season, It just so happens that I am somehow more willing to spend the money in the fall and winter on a single look.
Speaking of spending for my splurge item it would have to be the Tron jacket from the Calvin Klein Fall 2009 Collection. I can't even come up with a good reason to spend $1,695 on a jacket other than its so fly.
